“It was a dark and stormy night.” Actually it started on a warm, clear summer’s eve at the Sudbury, MA, library when a homeless, wheezy, parasite-ridden skeleton of a cat chose me to be his forever-companion. Mind you, it was not a matter of “hey, how about it?” According to the Cat Code, “Cats are Masters who decide and humans are Servants who act on it.” So when this ghost-feline wobbly jumped into my car and quickly settled himself on the passenger seat, it was a fait accompli. No ifs, ands, or buts. However, his decision, and my grudging acquiescence to it (I wasn’t yet sure I was ready for another kitty relationship after losing my little love, Sam), rewarded me with the most amazing adventures.

I also witnessed talents I never knew regular old cats had. Have you ever seen a house cat waltz, stroll on its hind legs across a room, roll over on cue? And that wasnt half of it. I certainly hadn’t ... that is, until Faust shared his Hollywood-style behaviors with me.As my alter ego, he soon became like another of my appendages. He traveled everywhere with me—sometimes where he should not have been. But we humans can be “too soon old and too late smart.” As my constant companion, he became famous ...

and, in some instances, “infamous,” like when he was hanging upside down from me at Lexington Gardens as I looked at plants. “What Faust the Dancing Cat Taught Me” follows the first two years of our partnership and life collaboration (with more to follow). He was a people cat who attracted admirers like a huge auto wreck-moving electromagnet.

No matter where he went, old friends and new friends alike gathered around him, to pet him, ask questions, bask in the glow of his seductive amber eyes, and marvel at his vampire fangs. But even if he hadn’t seemed like an antic “dog in a cat suit who walked on a leash and posed for photos,” Faust would have reminded me of the incredible joy of having another being love you and care for you unconditionally. That’s something we can’t even count on from other human beings.

In the process he taught me so much more about who and what cats are. But, most importantly, he taught me about myself, showing me insights about having truly understanding communication and relationships with others. He also taught me about the depth of the human-animal bond.

For all these things, not the least of which was all the silly and wild fun we had, I am extremely grateful. What others have said about Fausts book:“Very enjoyable and informative book. I loved it. Faust is a very smart cat with a caring, insightful human caregiver. The story is a reminder that our pets are constantly trying to communicate with us. We need to pay attention.

We need to respond to their emotional has well as their physical needs. This is a must read!” - Jim Shannon“I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT. It shows so much insight to Faust, but almost as importantly, into the person that you are, and I love that.

You are such a good writer and keep the reader wanting to turn the next page. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.” – Judith Moore“I just finished your Faust book, and I loved it. A true ‘cat-person’ will see so many of your experiences in their own kitty relationships!

All of the things that enchant us about cats ( their mystery, independence, insistence, playfulness and compassion) are there in spades with Faust. What a blessing to have had him in your life at just the right time.”- Karen D. O’Neil
